I have now spent one full day in Costa Rica. Yesterday’s flights all went smoothly but I was glad to have my first day of traveling alone over with. Even though my plane arrived in Costa Rica around 2, we didn’t make it to our homestays until 7 last night. My host mom is awesome. She also has a very energetic and friendly daughter. They both only speak Spanish which is great for helping me practice. One of my roommates speaks Spanish really well and the other has never taken a class and only knows a few phrases. It will be fun to see how quickly we all learn the language.
My two roommates and I picked our rooms without really thinking much about it. I got seriously lucky because my room doesn’t have a window. Normally, I would be sad that I didn’t get a window, but here there are no screens on the windows and they don’t close all the way. The mosquitos carry dengue fever and that sounds very unpleasant. The girls with windows get woken up by the street noises and the light. The only bad thing about my room is that I don’t get the wireless internet. That may mean less frequent blog updates and skype calls, but I will try my best.
Today really flew by. I started the day by helping my host mom cut and peel a papaya. Then, we went to orientation. After orientation, a city tour by bus, and a lot of struggle, some classmates and I finally found a place that was open where we could eat. Because it is the weekend, some students still don’t have the local currency and very few of us have calling cards or phones. I hope that changes tomorrow. Even with busy days, I have found myself missing my boyfriend, family, and friends. I appreciate their all their support and I promise to make the most of my time here. Well, tomorrow I will find out which class I get to take. Check back on Wednesday (or Thursday) because by then end of the day, I think I will have an interesting post.
I love you, Carly! Enjoy your adventure!!! :)
